Drug Offenses in the Military

Drug Charges Can Ruin Your Military Career

Drug abuse is running rampant throughout the United States Armed Forces. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the rates of prescription drug abuse among service members doubled between 2002 and 2005, and it nearly tripled between 2005 and 2008. In addition to the abuse of prescription drugs such as opiate painkillers, stimulants and sedatives, common street drugs such as marijuana, cocaine and heroin are also common. Further, the new class of synthetic drugs, including bath salts (synthetic cathinones), Spice or K2 (synthetic marijuana) and N-bomb or Smiles (a hallucinogenic mescaline derivative) is becoming an increasingly serious problem for the Armed Forces.

In some cases, military personnel who are caught with drugs are suffering from a serious substance addiction. Other times, the individual is experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder or has suffered a traumatic brain injury. NIDA reports on a study which discovered that 27 percent of soldiers returning from Iraq met the criteria for a classification of alcohol abuse and were at increased risk for developing a drug abuse problem. Unfortunately, those who fail a drug test urinalysis or who are caught using drugs are frequently given harsh punishments which ruin their military career and which may continue to cause them problems for the rest of their lives.
